AI Use & Governance Policy
PlainLaw Insight uses AI to translate legal language into plain English, spot potential issues, and prepare you for conversations with a licensed attorney. This page explains how AI is used, what safeguards are in place, and the limits of those safeguards.
1. How AI Is Used
- Document analysis: Text you upload or paste is sent to approved large language models, which generate a structured plain-language report.
- Follow-up Q&A: Questions and prior conversation are sent with document context to generate grounded answers.
- Issue spotting: Rules-based logic combined with AI inference flags clauses that may warrant attention.
2. AI Providers
We use vetted AI providers. All approved models are tracked in a model registry. PlainLaw Insight does not authorize providers to train their models on your content.
3. Governance Controls
- Audit logging: Every AI call is logged with model, prompt hash, output hash, latency, and status (append-only).
- Prohibited-phrase scanning: Outputs are screened for advice-style language; violations are flagged.
- Versioned disclaimers: Every report and export includes the active disclaimer version.
- Human-in-the-loop: Users can flag, accept, or escalate individual report items.
4. Known Limits
- AI output can be wrong, incomplete, or out of date.
- Laws vary by jurisdiction and change over time.
- The Service does not interpret your specific facts the way a licensed attorney would.
- The Service may not detect every risk, clause, or obligation in a document.
5. Hedged Language
Output is intentionally hedged ("this appears to mean…", "this clause may indicate…") to reinforce that the Service is interpretive rather than authoritative.
6. Your Responsibilities
- Review AI output critically and corroborate important conclusions with an attorney.
- Do not submit content you don't have the right to process.
- Do not use the Service to make consequential legal decisions without attorney review.
